When neither my short-forms nor my open chat got any traction

It's been a few months since I started making travel short-form videos. I was also running an info-sharing open chat alongside it. I thought the structure wasn't bad: post a short-form video, drop the open chat link underneath, and let that drive traffic in.

The problem was the response. My short-form view counts were stuck in place, and my open chat only barely hit its member count with zero actual conversation. It was a classic case of a KakaoTalk open chat ghost room — people were technically in the room, but nobody said a word.

I had no idea where to even start. Should I make more content, or rebuild the room from scratch? I just kept going back and forth. Then a fellow creator mentioned SocialUp to me. Hearing it was a self-serve ordering system, I figured I'd at least sign up and see.

What I did right #1 - Rebuilt the open chat foundation first

The first thing I did was set up open chat likes. My KakaoTalk open chat like count was so low that even newcomers seemed to just breeze right past the room. Changing just that one metric completely shifted the room's first impression.

Ordering took just a few clicks on the site. The work started the same day — no waiting around for days. When I reopened the room that evening, the numbers were already reflected.

Once that foundation was in place, a natural flow started forming where a few more people trickled in on top of it. Setting it up doesn't magically do everything on its own, but it clearly gave things a starting point.

⏱ One month after using it: a timeline of changes

Order Day
Finished the self-order in 5 minutes. The work was handled the same day, so there was nothing to wait for. Day 3
The work had already wrapped up on day one, and this is when the room started running on its own momentum. Day 7
Search visibility climbed, and I could visibly see new traffic building up day by day. Day 30
Growth settled into a natural rhythm. Reordering is now optional, whenever I actually need it.

What I did right #2 - Fixed up my channel and headcount metrics together

I realized a bit late that I couldn't just focus on the open chat — I needed to look at the channel too. I ran KakaoTalk channel growth and KakaoTalk channel post likes together. Once the posts started getting engagement, the channel itself looked a lot less empty.

I also paid attention to open chat headcount. I ran KakaoTalk headcount growth alongside general headcount growth. With both metrics moving together, the room started to look genuinely alive. Numbers aren't everything, but for someone walking in for the first time, those numbers are basically trust.

These orders were also processed the same day I requested them. When I checked back the next day to see what had changed, the setup was already done.

What I did right #3 - Gave my short-forms some attention too

I figured that fixing only the open chat while leaving my short-forms untouched would only get me half the result. So I set up KakaoTalk short-form likes and added a handful of KakaoTalk short-form comments too. Once a few comments started showing up under the videos, viewers stopped just scrolling past and actually stuck around a bit longer.

As the short-form engagement rose, traffic to the open chat link underneath naturally increased too. That's when it really clicked for me: the content, the short-form metrics, and the open chat metrics all need to work together. Fixing just one piece wasn't enough to keep the flow going.

What I did right #4 - Covered event-style content as well

Since it's a travel info room, I'd occasionally post about Gift Shop events or TalkDeal products. Setting up KakaoTalk Gift Shop product likes made those posts look much more natural. Compared to a post with almost no likes, the difference was night and day.

Same story with TalkDeal products. Once I added KakaoTalk TalkDeal product likes, more visitors started actually clicking through to check them out. At first I wondered if this level of detail even mattered, but once I tried it, I realized these small details add up and shape the whole impression.

If you want to start without any financial pressure, trying KakaoTalk free headcount growth first is also a solid option. I actually started at about that scale myself.

Looking back now, it was the right call

The reason I felt so stuck for months, in the end, was that I never had a clear starting point. Once I set up the open chat likes, channel metrics, headcount metrics, and short-form engagement one by one, people naturally started staying, and conversations slowly began to happen on top of that.

I ordered all of this myself through SocialUp. There was no complicated consultation — I just picked the items I needed and requested them, and since everything was processed the same day, it was easy to plan my next steps too.

Content is still something I wrestle with every day. But at the very least, visitors no longer get that empty, dead-room feeling when they walk in. If you're like me, stuck with a traffic structure built between short-forms and an open chat but getting no response, I'd say starting by fixing your metrics one at a time is a solid way to go.
